Since I gave birth to my daughter Lyla a few years back, the idea of preserving a family cultural narrative has been in the forefront of my mind. For the most part I have focused on a visual narrative, snapping thousands of photos of my daughter in an effort to remember every gesture, facial expression and experience since the day she was born. I have amassed several books of photos with tag lines and dates lest I forget the occasion at which the image was captured. While I still delight in my little muse, it has occurred to me that my history, or life as I remember it, is an important legacy to pass on to her. I have such rich and vivid memories of people, places and things that made me who I am and, consequently, will shape who she is that I should probably introduce her to them. In that vein, this blog will serve as a series of “Letters 2 Lyla” to explain where she comes via familial narratives in the hope that her past will provide her with roots so that she can bloom.
